NMSHMM to Visit the Trinity Site
Brian Pence, CHMM
Assaigai Analytical Laboratories, Inc.
Greetings NMSHMM,
Our August luncheon presentation explored the depths of drilling. I want to take this opportunity to thank Bryan Adams, Business Development for WDC Exploration and Wells, for his presentation. Many of us deal with wells and drilling projects in our scope of business, but often we don't have the inside picture of how the wells were drilled and developed. Bryan's presentation was very informative, and he fielded numerous questions from attendees.
Our field trip for this fall will be a fun filled evening and day learning about the Trinity Site, the beginning of the atomic age, and an explosives demonstration New Mexico Tech in Socorro. Please join us on Friday evening, Oct. 3rd, at the Atomic Museum in Old Town and on Saturday, October 4th for the Trinity Site Tour. See more details and reservation info within this newsletter and on our website, www.nmshmm.org.
As the fall approaches we start thinking about the State Fair, Balloon Fiesta, roasting chilies and of course, the annual NMSHMM presentation of the Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management (formerly known as the National Overview Course-NOC). I encourage you to sign up for this course. This is a great preparation tool for the CHMM exam, and is a good way to review some topics that you may not deal with on a day-to-day basis, while accruing some CEU credits toward recertification (this applies to both CHMMs and CIHs). Please see the website for registration details.
As always, I can be contacted at . Thank you!
Sincerely,
Brian
NMSHMM Fall Tour - Trinity Site
October 3 and 4
This year NMSHMM has worked with the National Atomic Museum to set aside a block of tickets for our membership and their families to participate in the normally sold out guided tour of the Trinity Site on October 4, 2008. The National Atomic Museum organizes an amazing tour of the Trinity Site which consists of:
The cost is $60 per person. Richie Spangler had the opportunity to do this trip several years ago, and he cannot imagine a better way to visit it (plus you can sleep on the bus since it leaves early in the morning). Because the trip is always sold out, the seating is limited, so put your request in early (the deadline for the NMSHMM block is September 15). To participate in the tour please contact Debbie Finfrock at to arrange for payment.

Proposed Amendments to NMED Hazardous Waste Management Regulation
Provided by Sandra Martin, CHMM
NMED Hazardous Waste Bureau
NMED is proposing amendments to the current Hazardous Waste Management Regulations, 20.4.1 NMAC and is requesting a hearing before the Environmental Improvement Board, the promulgating authority for these regulations. The petition requests that a hearing be held in conjunction with the Board's meeting on October 6, 2008.
The proposed amendments are necessary to update the Hazardous Waste Management Regulations to bring them into conformity with federal regulations. The amendments would adopt current federal regulations so that New Mexico's Hazardous Waste Program will remain in compliance with federal authorization requirements.
On June 30, 2008, the NMED sent a letter notifying the hazardous waste generators (small and large) in New Mexico of the proposed amendments.
On July 15, 2008, the NMED filed a petition requesting a hearing before the Environmental Improvement Board . This filing included the proposed rules and a statement of reasons.
On July 22, 2008, Gregory Green, Chairman of the Environmental Improvement Board, signed the Order Scheduling Hearing. The hearing has been scheduled for Monday, October 6, 2008 at the regularly schedule open meeting of the Board.
