Mike Sanders, CPG, CHMMPresident's Message - High Attendance at EHMM Course This Year
Mike Sanders, CPG, CHMM
GRAM, Inc.

Plans and preparations for the Essentials of Hazardous Materials Management (EHMM) training and CHMM exam preparation course are in full swing. The course will be held at the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) District 1 offices in Albuquerque, on November 16-18. A total of 25 students have signed up to take the course-a very good turnout considering the general state of the economy. Paul Karas has once again taken the lead on organizing and putting this course together, including lining up numerous environmental professionals as instructors, and as usual is doing an excellent job in this role.

NMSHMM board members have also been very involved in planning and preparations, and will also be assisting during the EHMM. Thanks also to board members and NMED employees Sandra Martin and Brian Salem for arranging for use of the NMED conference room again this year. We are very pleased with the response to the EHMM this year, and look forward to another successful course.

The date for the November lunch meeting (which would normally be held on Wednesday November 18) has been changed to Thursday November 12, 11:30 am-1:00 pm, and will be held at the Furr's Fresh Buffet, 2004 Wyoming Blvd NE, between Indian School and Menaul. The meeting has been moved to avoid conflicting with the EHMM course, and will also be a joint meeting with the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). Bob Edgar will be talking to us about new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) training requirements for individuals and organizations that perform operations that potentially disturb or impact lead-based paint. Please plan to join other NMSHMM and ASSE members at this lunch meeting, and I hope to see you there.

AMEC Materials Testing LaboratorySuccessful Fall Field Trip to AMEC’s Materials Testing Laboratory
Vickie Maranville, CHMM
AMEC Earth and Environmental, Inc.

The annual fall field trip was hosted by AMEC Earth and Environmental, Inc. (AMEC) on October 20. Twelve members attended the classroom presentation and materials testing demonstration at the AMEC Materials Testing Facility located on Jefferson, NE. Mr. John Tension, P.E. and Senior Geotechnical Engineer at AMEC provided a classroom presentation, detailing the materials testing capabilities and engineering services. Lunch was provided to attendees during the class presentation. Immediately following the classroom portion of the event, attendees received a tour of the materials testing facility. A foamed asphalt demonstration was conducted in the laboratory. Attendees were able to see the entire asphalt mixing process in the laboratory. Foamed asphalt incorporates recycled asphalt and elements of mix design to create an engineered asphalt product using recycled materials. A concrete cylinder demonstration was also provided in the laboratory. The tour finished with questions and answers.
